Choosing the Right Wattage

A power supply must cover the combined draw of the processor, graphics card and other parts with some headroom. A 750W unit suits a system with a mid-range to high-end graphics card and a gaming processor. Check your graphics card maker's recommended power supply rating before you buy.

Fixed Cables

A fixed-cable design has all cables attached, which keeps the price down. In a case with good cable routing space this works well, but unused cables must be tied away from the airflow path.

Installation Notes

Fit the power supply in the case with the fan facing the vent, connect the 24-pin motherboard cable, the CPU cable and the graphics card cables, then plug in drive power. Check the connector counts against your parts list.

Safety and Protections

Always buy a power supply that matches your parts, and check that the wall socket, extension cable and surge protection can handle the load. Do not open the unit, and replace it if the fan stops or you notice a burning smell. A good power supply protects the rest of the PC, so it is worth budgeting for it properly.
